East African Community opens office in Noida

An intergovernmental organisation of 7 partners EAC is one of the fastest growing blocs in the world

By Rukma Saluja

Industrialist and Trade Commissioner Anuj Agarwal brought together the seven countries of the East African Community (EAC) on April 19, 2022 to celebrate the new address of the East African Community, a regional intergovernmental organisation of seven countries in the African Great Lakes region.

On the occasion, Anuj Agarwal, Trade Commissioner EAC said, “We are happy to announce our new office at Noida Sector 127. EAC’s mission is to widen and deepen economic, political, social, and cultural integration in order to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, production, trade and investments. I would also like to thank our respectable PM Narendra Modi and the Uttar Pradesh government for providing assistance at this new address which is sure to foster relations between EAC and India. I have always considered the East African community as the best compared to other sub-regional economic blocs in Africa, in terms of free movement of people and goods, infrastructure integration and trade.”

The East African Community (EAC) comprises of The Democratic Republic of Congo, the republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. First formed in November 1999, between Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, welcomed its latest member, Congo, in April, 2022. The EAC’s scope of interaction and mutual benefit includes the political, the economic and the social. The group has made much progress as is evident from the East African Customs Union, the establishment of the Common Market in 2010 and the Implementation of the East African Monetary Union Protocol. That the benefits of a strong and united East African bloc are many would be to state the obvious.

While Anuj Aggarwal as Trade Commissioner is working hard to improve many areas in the fields that fall under his duties, a lot of progress has already been made. Among other things, EAC has signed four Mutual Recognition Agreements for Engineers; Architects; Accountants and Veterinary Officers. Aggarwal said, “I am looking forward to a strong partnership with the India EAC Council and strengthening these collaborations.”
